Hello, my name is Nicola Gwilym and I am a qualified person-centred counsellor based at Horton House. I also work from home in Liverpool L26.
Experience and qualifications
I have a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and regularly attend short courses on various mental health issues to ensure my knowledge is kept up to date.
I am an accredited member of the National Counselling Society (NCS), a counselling body that ensures I work professionally and ethically with clients. You can view my profile on their website, www.nationalcounsellingsociety.org.
I have mentored and coached in further education colleges in Merseyside for 18 years and I bring this experience into my counselling role, when and if needed.
I currently work with children, aged 7-11 years of age & have seven years’ experience of supporting their mental health and wellbeing in a large school in South Liverpool.
Ways I work as a counsellor
I am a very open and honest counsellor and try not to judge you as a client when I work with you. I show empathy to what you share with me in the counselling room but I don’t give advice or provide answers to your questions.
My experience in mentoring and coaching allows me to support you in making changes quickly and I can use solution-focused ways of working if needed with you.
I am passionate about working and supporting people who want to make changes to their lives. You might be struggling with self-esteem issues and find you are rarely being yourself.
I can support you through loss, whether it is bereavement, separation and/or divorce.Feelings of loss don’t only come from bereavement; you might be struggling to come to terms with children leaving home, changing jobs or losing friendships.
I am confident in supporting you in letting go of false negative beliefs so that you can become more authentic and start living your life more honestly and openly. This can be very freeing, allowing you to make changes in your life that you thought, in the past, were not possible. This, in turn, can help reduce anxiety and self-doubts and improve your mental well being.
Counselling children and young people
I work with children who are experiencing anxiety, low self-esteem and confidence and who might be getting bullied. This can sometimes lead to inappropriate behaviour and anger which I can support them with.
I have experience of working with children with a diagnosis (or who are on the pathway) of autism.
I use creative ways of working with children and find that I can build up trust quickly by using these creative activities to allow the child to express themselves more freely.
Costs of counselling
Sessions usually last 50 minutes and I charge £50 per session. Some concessions available.
I accept card and cash payments.
I offer a free initial online or telephone conversation to allow you to find out whether you feel I might be the right sort of counsellor to work with you.
Sessions usually take place weekly.
What happens during our first session?
I will go through a contract that will help us agree on the way we will work together. We will agree when we will meet and how often (although we can review this regularly if needed) and the issues that bring you to counselling. We will work at your pace and I will do my best to listen and support you in working out what has brought you to counselling.
